Signs Your AC Needs to Be Replaced (Not Just Repaired)

By Kenaire Cooling and Heating  ·  Hyde Park, NY

Every summer, homeowners across Hyde Park, Poughkeepsie, and the Hudson Valley face the same dilemma: the AC isn’t working right — do you repair it or replace it? The honest answer depends on a few key factors. As a local HVAC contractor, we’d rather give you the right answer than the expensive one.

Here are the clearest signs that your air conditioner is due for replacement, not just another repair.

1. Your System Is Over 10–15 Years Old

The average central air conditioner lasts 12–15 years with proper maintenance. If your unit is pushing that age and starting to cause problems, you’re approaching the end of its reliable life. Putting $1,000+ into a repair on a 14-year-old system rarely makes financial sense — you’re likely to face another repair within a year or two.

Rule of thumb: The 50% rule

If the repair cost is more than 50% of what a new system would cost, replace it. A new system also comes with a warranty and will be significantly more efficient than what you’re replacing.

2. You’re Paying for Frequent Repairs

One repair every few years is normal. But if you’re calling an HVAC tech every summer — a capacitor one year, a compressor the next — those costs add up fast. Track what you’ve spent on repairs over the past three years. If it’s significant, a new system is a smarter investment.

3. Your Energy Bills Keep Climbing

Older AC systems lose efficiency as they age, especially when they haven’t been maintained regularly. If your electric bills in July and August have been creeping up year over year but your usage hasn’t changed, your system is working harder than it should. New systems are dramatically more efficient — a 15-year-old unit might run at 10 SEER while a new one runs at 18–20 SEER. The energy savings often offset a significant portion of the replacement cost over time.

4. Your Home Isn’t Cooling Evenly

Hot spots in certain rooms, inconsistent temperatures between floors, or a system that runs constantly but never gets the house comfortable are all signs of a system struggling to keep up. Sometimes this is a ductwork issue, but often it means the equipment is at the end of its life or was undersized to begin with.

Hudson Valley homes and uneven cooling

Many older homes in Dutchess and Ulster Counties were built before central air was standard. If your existing system was retrofitted into an older home, it may never have been the right size. A new system — or a ductless mini-split setup — can solve this permanently.

5. Your System Uses R-22 Refrigerant

R-22 (Freon) was phased out in 2020. If your AC still uses it and develops a refrigerant leak, you’re in trouble — R-22 is extremely expensive and difficult to source. If your system is R-22 and leaking, replacement is almost always the better choice.

6. Unusual Noises or Smells

Banging, grinding, squealing, or rattling sounds from your AC are never a good sign. Burning smells can indicate electrical issues. While some of these can be repaired, on an older system they often signal that major components are failing.

7. Excessive Humidity Indoors

A properly functioning AC removes humidity as it cools. If your home feels sticky and humid even when the AC is running, the system may no longer be able to do its job properly. This is uncomfortable and can lead to mold issues in Hudson Valley homes.

When Repair Makes Sense

Not every AC problem means replacement. If your system is under 10 years old, well-maintained, and the repair is straightforward — a capacitor, contactor, or refrigerant recharge on a newer system — repair is usually the right call. We’ll always give you an honest assessment.
