How to Prepare Your Heating System for Winter in the Hudson Valley

By Kenaire Cooling and Heating  ·  Hyde Park, NY

Winter in the Hudson Valley is no joke. Temperatures in Hyde Park, Poughkeepsie, and across Dutchess and Ulster Counties regularly drop into the teens and single digits. The last thing you want is your furnace, boiler, or oil burner failing on a February night.

The good news: a little preparation in fall goes a long way. Here’s what every Hudson Valley homeowner should do before the heating season starts.

Step 1: Schedule a Professional Tune-Up

This is the single most important thing you can do. A professional heating tune-up from Kenaire includes a full inspection of your system, cleaning of key components, a safety check, and identification of any issues before they become emergencies.

We recommend scheduling your tune-up in September or October — before the cold hits and before our schedule fills up. Emergency heating calls in January cost more and take longer to get on the calendar.

Pro Tip

Booking a fall tune-up is also a great time to ask about efficiency upgrades or whether your aging system should be replaced before winter rather than after it fails at the worst possible time.

Step 2: Replace Your Air Filter

If you have a forced-air furnace, a clean filter is essential for both efficiency and air quality. A clogged filter restricts airflow, makes your system work harder, and can cause overheating. Replace it at the start of heating season and check it monthly throughout winter.

Step 3: Test Your System Early

Don’t wait until the first cold night to turn on your heat. Fire it up in early October when temperatures first start to drop. Listen for unusual noises, check that all vents are blowing warm air, and make sure the thermostat is responding correctly. If something seems off, you have time to get it looked at before you actually need the heat.

Step 4: Check Your Thermostat

Switch your thermostat from “cool” to “heat” and make sure it’s working properly. If you have an older thermostat, fall is a great time to upgrade to a smart thermostat. They can cut heating costs by 10–15% by learning your schedule and adjusting temperature automatically.

For Oil Burner Owners in the Hudson Valley

Oil burners are common in older homes throughout Dutchess, Ulster, and Orange Counties. Before winter:

Safety First

Carbon monoxide from a poorly maintained oil burner or furnace is odorless and deadly. Make sure you have working CO detectors on every floor, especially near sleeping areas.

For Boiler Owners

Boilers require their own maintenance checklist:
